Admitting his fault in her death would be akin to being caught "red handed". So, to expand on One's theory that he's suffering from having his sister's blood on his hands, I would venture to say that it also applies to his fear of letting others know the truth of what happened to Mari.
Omori can get a move eventually simply called Red Hands although I think it's only available through the Hikikomori route. Just thought I would add a few speculations of my own to the mix. I pretty much came to the same conclusions as you guys with this.
